Despite many advanced forms of medications and surgery, a high percentage of chronic sinusitis cases cannot be cleared up. And, worse, its incidence has increased steadily over the past decade. People suffering from chronic sinusitis or other nasal problems are on the increase worldwide, interestingly particularly in the most developed countries.

This is because the modern approach to treat sinus problems is focused on clearing bacterial infections and providing symptomatic relief whereas chronic sinusitis has some hidden, underlying causes, which if not treated, render all medications and surgery ineffective.

The underlying causes of sinusitis are failure of mucociliary system, vasomotor (non-allergic) rhinitis, and mold allergy. These are the prime reasons why a certain fraction of people can breathe only through their mouths and are major reasons why chronic sinus conditions can be so hard to cure. Below is a brief explanation of them:

1. Failure of mucociliary system accounts for a huge share of chronic sinus problems. Mucociliary System is a mechanism, which serves to trap and, to some degree, destroy particles like pollen and foreign invaders such as viruses, bacteria and other infectious agents in your sinuses. Since microbes and allergens are always present in the air we breathe, we need this system to be constantly working; if it fails, sinus problems ensue and endure. And, without the system recovering, no surgery or medication, even the strongest antibiotics, will provide a lasting remedy.
Mucociliary defense is based on sinus membranes which host two special kinds of cells. These cells produce a flowing mucus blanket which covers all over the inner walls of the nose and sinuses and includes various kinds of antiseptic enzymes which kill or immobilize microbes.
If this natural cleansing and defense system fails for some reason, the gates of your sinuses are opened to many airborne microbes. If the mucociliary system stays in an impaired state for some time, sinus problems ensue. These problems do not only include infections. You may develop allergies or chronic nasal congestion due to constant inflammation at any age if your mucociliary system becomes debilitated.
In such a condition, help from outside won’t give you lasting relief because microbes and allergens are always present in the air. Some patients, who never get relief from sinus medications and surgery, can’t benefit because their mucociliary system doesn’t function properly to cope with airborne microbes and allergens.
You cannot always take decongestants; you cannot live forever with sprays. Besides, even if you wanted to, you couldn’t find a medication that would prevent all viruses from making you sick. Thus, you must have your mucociliary system functioning properly. Unfortunately, however, current medical approach never cares about it; actually oral antihistamines and oral decongestants debilitate the mucociliary system in the long turn making you dependent on drugs.

2.Vasomotor rhinitis: Vasomotor rhinitis is a nerve condition which keeps nasal passage clogged for no obvious reason. This constant obstruction of nasal airway paves the way to sinus infections.
Vasomotor rhinitis is not uncommon. It Experts at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota (USA) claim that vasomotor rhinitis affects approximately 17 million people in the U.S. – both children and adults. As the total number of sinus sufferers in the US is 37 million, vasomotor rhinitis accounts for nearly one half of the cases. So, it is definitely a condition which must be treated but it rarely is.
Vasomotor rhinitis cannot be treated with drugs. So drug companies never support a study on vasomotor rhinitis. Scientists who want to study it cannot find funds. Also they cannot share their know-how because no symposium or conference on vasomotor rhinitis treatments is arranged since its treatment makes no money. As a result, most physicians have not even heard about this important health condition.
But, we have found out that Russian doctors were quite well informed about it and were treating it since 1960s. Their treatment is based on some breathing exercises and biofeedback exercises which you can do at home or office and it is quite successful.

3. Fungal allergy: This was discovered in 1999 for the first time but did not get attention until 2002. It is now accepted that a vast majority of chronic sinus sufferers are also afflicted with this form of allergy without being aware of it. Modern medicine is now working to develop drugs for it. But there is no one available yet. Besides what they are trying to do is to invent an antifungal spray that will kill fungi inside sinuses. This is another reflection of the main misconception about chronic sinusitis: Chronic sinusitis is not a disease that can be cured by clearing an existing infection only. Those fungi and their spores are always present in the air and can invade your sinuses at any time. So, even if you clear fungi inside your sinuses after some time fungi will return. This is not a cure. Plus, as some serious doctors say fungal allergy stems from a sensitivity of the body towards airborne fungi. So, the true cure for fungal allergy is to eliminate or at least reduce that sensitivity.
It is a point of regret that modern medicine is not focused on the hidden, underlying causes of sinusitis. Therefore, it is not promising to come up with a definite cure for sinusitis unless a drastic change in approach takes place in some near future.

Founder and director of Smell & Taste Treatment and Research Foundation ( Chicago, USA), Dr. Alan Hirsch says that septoplasty is perhaps the most over-sold form of surgery. As a person who had sinus surgery twice (one septoplasty and one endoscopic sinus surgery), and as a practicing naturopath, I want to assure you that it is very unlikely to create relief which will last more than one year after any form of sinus surgery. In most cases relief disappears after the 6th month. Then, you suffer a return of your chronic sinus problems, pains, pressure and all of the discomfort that goes with it.
As a matter of fact our sinus treatment plan eliminates the need for sinus surgery on most occasions. However, if your doctors tell you that you definitely need surgery for your sinus problems, please heed my advice on one point: Choose local anesthesia rather general.
Cardiac and pulmonary complications related to general anesthesia are well-known, and an anesthesiologist will take care of them when he or she talks with you to find out which type of anesthesia is appropriate for you. But there is one other disadvantage of general anesthesia which applies to sinus surgery and this is one which is often overlooked.
General anesthesia suppresses the immune system considerably, and this can create subsequent complications following the surgery. This is particularly true if you have a fungal infection in your sinuses. If fungal colonies cannot be totally eradicated during the surgery, your suppressed immune system cannot fight against the remaining fungi. Fungi then find their way to the brain causing meningitis – which may cause fatality. Last year, we lost a person who was very dear to us, after a sinus surgery aimed to remove fungal balls in her sinuses. I learned that she visited the hospital hoping to find a relief from her constantly-blocked nose, and she left it in a burial case. She was just 39 years-old, and a mother of two young children.
In short, it may be of vital importance to have a strong immune system if you plan to have sinus surgery – and this is not possible with general anesthesia.
However, there is one thing I have learned in the past few years. Although most sinus surgery could be done with local anesthesia, a significantly higher than necessary amount is performed under general anesthesia. This is because having sinus surgery under local anesthesia can be rather uncomfortable and some patients cannot stand it. This discomfort is not due to pain; you do not feel pain with local anesthesia, but you almost kind of ‘feel’ what is being done in your nose. The incisions, hammers striking in septoplasty, bone spur removal and bone or cartilage removals can all be felt to some degree. And this may be extremely annoying, particularly if the surgery lasts longer than half an hour, which becomes the case if some large tissue or structure is to be removed.
Some female patients or children cannot bear this annoyance and may start shouting in the middle of surgery “Hey, stop this and make me sleep. I want general anesthesia”. Doctors who have previous experience of this tend to suggest general anesthesia to their female or young patients – even if there is no physical need for it.
Doctors may sometimes endorse general anesthesia so much that the patient may feel obliged to accept it. I know that this happens, and therefore I want to make a strong suggestion, particularly to women who are about to have sinus surgery: Choose local anesthesia – even if the doctor suggests a general one. If your doctor states a serious necessity for general anesthesia, you should, of course, take it. But this is rarely the case. So, if your doctor gives you the option of which type to take, choose local anesthesia.
If your doctor endorses general anesthesia, try to find out why. Ask them their reasons for advising it. If you find that they do not have a clear reason for it, just thank them for their suggestion, and then say that it is your final decision to have local anesthesia during surgery.
When the surgery time comes around, be psychologically prepared. You will feel uncomfortable touches inside your nose and sinuses. But the operation would not be any different if you were unconscious under general anesthesia. Be as patient as you can, stand firm, and grit your teeth if necessary. Everything will be over within a short amount of time.

Sinus infections are diagnosed in more than 30 million US residents every year and are among the most common reasons people see their doctor. Sinus problems are usually diagnosed after taking a medical history, doing a physical exam and evaluating the signs and symptoms. However most people know they have a sinus problem or sinus infection before they ever visit their doctor. The doctor visit may follow days or even weeks of trying to cure a sinus infection.
Sinus problems are frequent among people with immune problems. Sinus infections can last for weeks or months without the right treatment and often people go through dozens of sinus solutions without any luck.
In the past sinus infections were treated with antibiotics which were prescribed for 7- 10 days in an attempt to reach the sinuses, however they are usually not prescribed anymore because it’s an established fact that most sinus infections are caused by fungi or viruses. In addition the antibiotics generally were not able to reach the deep sinus cavities. Americans have spent billions of dollars on drugs or medications that promise relief from sinus symptoms and these did not work.
Sinusitis can be acute, which is usually temporary, or chronic, which requires a more permanent solution. Sinus problems can affect breathing and produce a cough from irritating the cough reflex in the throat from sinus drainage. For people with acute or chronic sinusitis, the openings of the cavities are usually narrow and blocked.
Four sets of sinus cavities reside within your head. These are openings that drain mucous and debris out of the nasal passages. Although they are rare, complications can occur including abscess, orbital cellulitis, meningitis or osteomyelitis.
The goal of sinus treatment is to get rid of the sinus infection or sinus problem, reduce the swelling of the openings to the sinus cavities, promote good sinus drainage and prevent any serious complications.
You may get relief from an air purifier if your sinus infections are allergy-related or you live in a smoke-filled house. Put a warm, wet washcloth on your face several times a day. Try to avoid flying if you’re congested. If you have to fly take along saline nasal spray to try to keep the tissues moist. The dry air irritates the sinuses, increasing the chance of infection if you don’t have one.
Check for possible soreness over some of the sinuses by gently pressing or tapping on the cheeks and forehead although for the deeper sinus cavities this won’t work. Make sure to drink plenty of water to help thin and moisten the mucus.
Eat lots of fresh fruits and raw vegetables, which are rich in antioxidants and many other nutrients that boost your immune system and help your body resist infection. Avoid the obvious – smoke, dust, fumes, aerosol sprays, pollutants and anything airborne. Sinus infections are also much more common when there is exposure to cigarette smoke.
Living with chronic sinusitis or battling occasional acute sinus infections or sinus headaches doesn’t have to be a lifetime problem. You can get rid of sinus infections without antibiotics and avoid sinus surgery. A clear understanding of how the sinuses work, knowing all you can do naturally, applying common sense and treating sinus symptoms early will help you get rid of your sinus problems for good.

In the U. S. millions of dollars are spent every year for antibiotics and other medications that promise to bring relief to people with sinus infection but they don’t work. Sinus infections and other sinus problems account for millions of visits to clinics every year. These infections and are caused mostly by fungi but also bacteria and viruses.
Sinusitis or sinus infections are one of the most common health complaints in the U. S. People are diagnosed usually after a reviewing of the patient’s history and a physical examination, and going over the patient’s symptoms, however many people are fully aware they have one without ever visiting their doctor.
A common symptom that is usually but not always present if you have a sinus infection is yellowish mucous or phlegm. While green and clear mucous can be signs of other types of infections or problems, usually yellow mucous or sputum means the sinuses are infected. If you think you have a sinus infection make sure to note the color of your sputum. The sinuses drain down into the throat and you may feel a lump or something there from time to time. Sinusitis can also be a complication of an allergy too
In people who have chronic sinusitis, the openings of the sinus cavities are blocked and narrowed. Nasal secretions, debris, particles and infectious material back up into the one of the sets of sinus cavities, often leading to pain and pressure but not always because it’s systemic one can feel tired or lethargic.
Your doctor may use a light to look into the sinuses that can be reached to look for any inflammation. If the light doesn’t shine through, the sinuses then the sinuses are blocked. Not all the sinus cavities can be viewed this way however.
There are actually four sets of sinuses located in your behind your face and in your head.
The sinuses are air-filled cavities. In healthy people, there are nasal openings that drain debris and mucous out of the cavities and into the nose.
Of the many symptoms that can be present in a sinus infection they can include a stuffy nose, which can run for ten days or more and often two weeks if it isn’t taken care of properly, a runny nose with clear, often yellow or sometimes green mucus, sometimes fever, daytime cough – especially in the morning, a scratchy throat, smelly breath – found often in young children, sometimes a swelling around the eyes, sinus headaches (it used to be thought they were uncommon but not anymore) and facial pain.
If you have difficult breathing and a cough together these are usually symptoms of sinusitis or bronchitis. When sleeping at night if you lay flat, your sinuses may drain into your lungs. Sometimes this can cause pneumonia. If you have a full blown infection it is better to sleep propped up with pillows.
The treatment of sinus infections should be to resolve the infection, reduce swelling and promote sinus drainage, prevent any serious complications, such as pneumonia, meningitis or brain abscess, and stop this process in its tracks. You may benefit from an air purifier if your sinus infections are allergy-related, or if you live in a smoke-filled environment or they occur too often.
Commonly used medical therapies, including saline nasal sprays, humidification, moisturization and nasal irrigation can be very effective for anyone suffering from chronic sinus infections.
There are drug-free, effective sinus treatments today that are totally natural. My friends and family members and others who have suffered for years with sinus problems, sinus infections and constantly running noses or stuffed noses, no longer suffer today. Seek out these sinus cures, ‘busters’ and natural treatments and get rid of your sinus problems forever.

The sinuses are air-filled spaces within the bones of the face and skull. They are lined by mucous membrane and connect with the nasal cavity through small channels. The sinuses may become infected whenever an infection is present in the nose and throat, such as occurs in the common cold, influenza, ect. The normal drainage channels from the sinuses become blocked by the infection, and this may also cause the sinuses to become infected. People who do a lot of swimming, diving, snorkeling, or scuba diving are also prone to develop sinus trouble. Any poor health habits such as eating an unhealthy diet, lack of proper exercise, uncleanliness, lack of fresh air, or an inadequate fluid intake may prolong sinus trouble. Symptoms Pain over the sinuses, sometimes becoming very severe, aching eyes, discharge from the nose or down the throat, low-grade fever, headache, running eyes and nose. The symptoms may be very similar to those seen in hay fever, which, however, is usually due to an allergic condition. In fact, the two diseases frequently occur at the time. The Natural Treatment:

The only cure is to thoroughly cleanse the body of all poisons; then there will be no sinus trouble. Remove the causes. Stay of a fruit juices diet for 4 or 5 days. Drink them separately: oranges, grapefruit, lemons (diluted in water), pineapples, and grapes (all unsweetened). Medicinal Herbs: - Plantain: Good for healing external and internal skin and membranes and will clear the head of mucous. “Side Effects” It’s an antiseptic healing substance especially of the skin. It is also a diuretic. - Bayberry bark: It cleanses and heals the sinuses of all putrid matter. “Side Effects” It’s very good when sick with a cold or flu. It heals stomach and throat membranes. - Golden Seal: It’s great for stomach problems and nausea. One of the best remedies of all the herbs. It seems like a cure all because it kills and neutralizes poisons.
