A large amount of the population suffer from sinusitis every year. A sinus is a cavity in the skull which is used to make the skull lighter, give room for the skull to grow, and to cool down the inhaled air. There are four types of sinuses in humans which include the maxillary, ethmoid, sphenoid, and frontal sinuses. The maxillary sinus cavity is located below the eye and to the side of the nose below the cheeks. The ethmoid sinus and the sphenoid sinus are some of the most functional sinuses and are located between the eyes and under the nose. This money goes mainly towards doctors’ consultation fees and the cost of antibiotics and other medications.

Sinusitis is the medical term for inflammation (irritation and swelling) of the sinuses. It’s usually caused by infection. Sinusitis is an inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, which may or may not be as a result of infection, from bacterial, fungal, viral, allergic or autoimmune issues. Newer classifications of sinusitis refer to it as rhinosinusitis, taking into account the thought that inflammation of the sinuses cannot occur without some inflammation of the nose as well (rhinitis).

The sinuses are air-filled spaces within the bones of the face and skull. They are lined by mucous membrane and connect with the nasal cavity through small channels. The sinuses may become infected whenever an infection is present in the nose and throat, such as occurs in the common cold, influenza, ect. The normal drainage channels from the sinuses become blocked by the infection, and this may also cause the sinuses to become infected.
